Skill Building Programs

Challenging behavior shrinks when skills grow. Skill building focuses on what your child CAN do: communicating needs, playing and connecting with others, regulating big emotions, and handling daily life more independently, taught in ways your child actually enjoys, at home, through you.

How Jess practices

This is for you if…

Parents who want to move beyond crisis management and actively build their child's communication, social, emotional, and independence skills.

  • Your child struggles to communicate wants and needs, and frustration boils over
  • Play dates and family gatherings end in tears more often than not
  • Big emotions go from zero to a hundred with nothing in between
  • You are doing everything for your child and wondering how independence starts

What we work on together

Communication skills

Whether your child speaks, is minimally speaking, or uses AAC, we build functional communication first: asking, refusing, and sharing, because a child who can say it does not have to show it with behavior.

Social and play skills

Neurodiversity-affirming social goals: turn-taking, joining play, and connection on your child's terms, never scripted 'normal-looking' behavior for its own sake.

Emotional regulation

Your child learns to notice big feelings earlier and use real strategies to come back down, with you coached to be their co-regulator instead of their trigger.

Everyday independence

Getting dressed, following routines, handling transitions, community outings: broken into achievable steps and taught with your child's assent.

Common questions

What skills should we work on first?

Usually functional communication: a reliable way for your child to ask, refuse, and get help. It is the skill that most quickly reduces challenging behavior, because so much behavior is communication that has no better channel yet. From there, targets depend on your child and your family's biggest friction points.

My child is not motivated by praise or rewards. Can they still learn?

Yes. Motivation is not missing; it is just specific. Skill teaching starts from what your child already loves, their interests, sensory preferences, and favorite people, and builds learning into it. When teaching follows motivation instead of fighting it, children who 'refuse everything' often surprise their parents.

Will you make my child suppress stimming or act neurotypical?

No. Stimming, honest refusal, and autistic ways of playing and connecting are not problems to fix. Goals target skills that expand your child's options and reduce their distress, never behaviors that just make them look more 'typical.'
